Booting RHEL 5.6 system hangs with "Simple Boot Flag at 0x36 set to 0x80" message on VMWare ESX-3.5

Issue

• RHEL 5.6 system hangs during boot after a daily restart.
• Last message on screen was :
  Simple Boot Flag at 0x36 set to 0x80
  fyi: This server is running as a VM in VMware ESX 3.5
