Unable to download VMware VDDK images for Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV)

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • VMware vSphere / ESXi
  • VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK)
  • Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV)
  • Openshift Virtualization CNV - 4.X

Issue

  • Customers are unable to locate or download the VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) image recommended for MTV migrations
  • Previous public download links provided by VMware for the VDDK are no longer active, resulting in a "not found" or "access denied" error

Resolution

Red Hat is aware that VMware VDDK images are currently unavailable to end-users via standard public downloads.

The VDDK image is proprietary software owned, shipped, and deployed by Broadcom. Due to licensing restrictions, Red Hat cannot host, distribute, or provide this image directly to customers.

To obtain the necessary VDDK image, you must contact VMware/Broadcom Support directly and request access to the image.

Red Hat Engineering is actively investigating long-term solutions and alternatives to address this dependency issue on our end.

In the mean time, a workaround using Storage offloading/Xcopy could suffice. However, this requires your backend storage to support such features. See the following doc links for more information:

11.5. Migrating VMware virtual machines by using storage copy offload
11.3. Creating ownerless storage maps by using the form page of the MTV UI
Storage Offload Migrations with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

This solution is part of Red Hat’s fast-track publication program, providing a huge library of solutions that Red Hat engineers have created while supporting our customers. To give you the knowledge you need the instant it becomes available, these articles may be presented in a raw and unedited form.
