XFS fallocate(2) returning ENOSPC prematurely

Issue

  • We see ENOSPC returned from posix_fallocate(3) when backing up our postgres database. This occurs despite apparent available free space.
2025-08-06 00:002:44.411 UTC [1234567] [[unknown]] [] [10.1.1.55] ERROR:  could not extend file "aaa/11111/bb_11_202508061/11111/2222222222" with FileFallocate(): No space left on device

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise LInux 8.8

    • kernel-4.18.0-477.27.1.el8_8

  • Red Hat Enterprise LInux 9.6

    • kernel-5.14.0-570.33.1.el9_6
