Red Hat OpenShift: Wildcard DNS vs. Reverse Proxy for Application Routes

Issue

• Why is a wildcard DNS entry (*.apps..) necessary instead of using a single DNS entry pointing to the ingress controller?
• Can a reverse proxy be configured with a single DNS entry (e.g., apps..) to route requests based on subpath rather than subdomain?
• What are the technical limitations or drawbacks of using a reverse proxy instead of wildcard DNS?
  -Would using a reverse proxy impact OpenShift’s ability to dynamically generate and manage routes for deployed applications?
