Why "ata_id: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sda" errors seen after upgrading the kernel ?

Issue

  • After upgrade to RHEL 6.2 following messages are seen for internal hard disks.
ata_id: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sda'
ata_id: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb'
  • hdparm command fails
$ hdparm -i /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid exchange
HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument

$ hdparm -I /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid exchange

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2
  • hdparm v9.16
