Why am I unable to format a volume bigger than 16TB using the EXT4 filesystem?

Issue

  • Unable to partition a 32TB volume in ext4 using mkfs.ext4. A message reports the volume as being too big.
  • We see the following error message:
Size of device too big to be expressed in 32 bits using a block size of 4096

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • EXT4 filesystem
