How to prepare bootable USB media for RHEL6 using DVD isos

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I don't want to waste DVDs or use PXE booting -- how can I create a bootable USB that doesn't require a second hard drive, DVD, or network copy of the DVD?

  • Up until RHEL 6.3 was released, the RHEL6 Installation Guide detailed on the Making_USB_Media page how to use dd to write out a RHEL6 DVD iso to a usb disk, making it bootable. Why were these instructions removed from the Installation Guide in v6.3?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
