Why do I see 'No human readable MCE decoding support on this CPU type.' in logs at boot time?

Issue

  • Why do I see the following errors in my /var/log/messages file and at boot time?

     [Hardware Error]: No human readable MCE decoding support on this CPU type.
     [Hardware Error]: Run the message through 'mcelog --ascii' to decode.
     [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
    
  • mcelog is generated but there is no output

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
