Why do I see I/O errors and connection failures for my iSCSI devices after a 'ping timeout' is reported in RHEL?

Issue

  • I see iSCSI errors in /var/log/messages

    iscsid: connection1:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx 4363801791, last ping 4363806791, now 4363811791  
iscsid: Kernel reported iSCSI connection 1:0 error (1011) state (3)

  • My application receives I/O errors when iSCSI ping timeouts occur in the logs
