Red Hat Enterprise Linux server using NTP will not keep time in sync with Windows-synced NTP server / windows NTP server

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux server is configured to use NTP to synchronize with a Windows Time service provided by pre - Windows 2016 Server (possibly acting as an Active Directory) or any server that is otherwise using its own local clock as a time source (as per ntpq -np). Although, time is not kept in sync.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • NTP server is using its own local clock as reference (ntpq refid field is .LOCL. or LOCAL) or is otherwise not very accurate
  • syncing against windows ntp service through another ntpv3 server or directly with windows ntp server
