What does "SMB signature verification returned error = -13" mean?

Issue

  • We have a CIFS mount which currently appears to be working as expected, but we see the following error constantly:
kernel: CIFS VFS: SMB signature verification returned error = -13
kernel: CIFS VFS: SMB signature verification returned error = -13
kernel: CIFS VFS: SMB signature verification returned error = -13

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1
  • kernel-3.10.0-229.14.1.el7.x86_64
  • CIFS client mounting Samba or Windows SMB export
