RHEL7.1: kernel crash due to list_del corruption and LIST_POISON called from cifs find_writeable_file

Issue

  • System crashed while running 'tar' which was doing a backup to CIFS
  • Prior to the crash, we see a lot of the following messages: CIFS VFS: No writable handles for inode

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1
    • kernel 3.10.0-229.1.2.el7
  • cifs
  • 'tar' command being used to backup a database to CIFS
  • seen with EMC / VMX CIFS server
