httpd fails to proxy with "ajp_msg_append_cvt_string(): BufferOverflowException 4 8186" error

Some requests are failing to proxy through httpd to JBoss and we see the following error:
[error] ajp_msg_append_cvt_string(): BufferOverflowException 4 8186
