What happens if pid_max is reached on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have an Oracle database server which has following pid_max setting set and it seems we have almost reached the pid_max value:
# cat /proc/sys/kernel/pid_max
147456
  • Do we have to worry about or does the kernel take a new pid number from the lower range when spawning a new process?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
