"Inconsistent metadata found" after running vgcfgrestore on LVM volume groups on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Issue

  • After running vgcfgrestore successfully with a modified backup file, activating the volume group reports an error:
[root@server1 ~]# vgcfgrestore --file /tmp/backupvg_modified.vg backupvg
  Restored volume group backupvg
[root@server1 ~]# vgchange -ay backupvg
  Volume group "backupvg" inconsistent
  WARNING: Inconsistent metadata found for VG backupvg - updating to use version 149
  7 logical volume(s) in volume group "backupvg" now active

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • Reported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) update 8
  • LVM2 - Reported on version lvm2-2.02.42-5.el4
  • For whatever reason, vgcfgrestore was required to restore the volume group metadata
  • After running vgcfgrestore, Inconsistent metadata was detected after activating the volume group.
