CVE-2026-84971
Description
A flaw was found in MONGOCRYPT. Improper handling of an unexpected value size in the decryption path of the client-side encryption library can lead to a failed internal check. A remote attacker, by placing a specially crafted encrypted value or controlling application responses, could exploit this to terminate the process using the library, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
A flaw was found in libmongocrypt. When processing malformed encrypted data, the library triggers a failed internal check that terminates the process. An attacker able to place malformed encrypted values where the application will decrypt them, or able to control responses the application receives, can cause a denial of service.
Mitigation
Update to libmongocrypt 1.20.4 or later.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
An attacker that can trigger an assert statement can still lead to a denial of service if the relevant code can be triggered by an attacker, and if the scope of the assert() extends beyond the attacker's own session.
