CVE-2026-68178

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's NSM (Network Shared Memory) misc device. A local user could exploit this by opening the /dev/nsm device and then unloading the NSM module. This allows a subsequent operation (ioctl) on the open file descriptor to call into memory that has been deallocated, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution or a denial of service.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity,Availability,Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

This weakness may result in the corruption of memory, and perhaps instructions, possibly leading to a crash. If the corrupted memory can be effectively controlled, it may be possible to execute arbitrary code.
