CVE-2026-59641

Description

A flaw was found in Bouncy Castle for Java. The S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) validator improperly trusts the signing time asserted by the signer during path validation. This could allow an attacker to bypass certificate path validation, potentially leading to the acceptance of invalid or expired certificates. Such an issue can compromise the integrity of signed data.

Statement

This Important flaw in Bouncy Castle for Java allows an attacker to bypass S/MIME signature validation by manipulating the signer-asserted signing time. This can lead to the acceptance of invalid or expired certificates, compromising the integrity of signed data within Red Hat products that rely on Bouncy Castle for S/MIME processing, such as Enterprise Application Platform and Red Hat JBoss Fuse.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
