CVE-2026-59091

Description

A flaw was found in GIMP's file format plugins, including those for PSD and PAA files. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted image file. This could lead to unexpected application behavior or other potential security impacts without requiring further user interaction.

Statement

This Important vulnerability in GIMP's image file plugins, specifically for PSD and PAA formats, allows for information disclosure or potential arbitrary code execution. It is triggered when a user opens a specially crafted image file, a common user action for image manipulation software. The local nature of the exploit is offset by the significant impact of potential system compromise or sensitive data exposure.

Mitigation

Users should avoid opening untrusted image files, particularly those in PSD or PAA formats, with GIMP. Exercising caution with files from unknown or suspicious sources can prevent exploitation of these vulnerabilities.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
