CVE-2025-40146
Description
From CVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: blk-mq: fix potential deadlock while nr_requests grown Allocate and free sched_tags while queue is freezed can deadlock[1], this is a long term problem, hence allocate memory before freezing queue and free memory after queue is unfreezed. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/all/0659ea8d-a463-47c8-9180-43c719e106eb@linux.ibm.com/
Statement
The patch fixes a potential deadlock in the block multiqueue subsystem when growing nr_requests. Previously, allocation and freeing of scheduler tags occurred while the queue was frozen, leading to circular lock dependencies between freeze/unfreeze and tag updates. This bug could hang the system under heavy I/O but doesn’t allow privilege escalation - it’s a local kernel-level DoS with medium severity.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other); DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
Each thread of execution will "hang" and prevent tasks from completing. In some cases, CPU consumption may occur if a lock check occurs in a tight loop.
