CVE-2024-50035

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) implementation. A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted message with a zero size to the pppoe_sendmsg() function, which leads to an uninitialized value being used in the ppp_async_encode() function. This can result in information disclosure and a denial of service (DoS).

Mitigation

If PPPoE functionality is not required, the `ppp_async` kernel module can be blacklisted to prevent its loading. Create a file like `/etc/modprobe.d/disable-ppp_async.conf` with the content `blacklist ppp_async`. A system reboot or module reload may be required for the changes to take effect.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Read Application Data

When reusing a resource such as memory or a program variable, the original contents of that resource may not be cleared before it is sent to an untrusted party.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

The uninitialized resource may contain values that cause program flow to change in ways that the programmer did not intend.
