CVE-2023-1077

Description

A memory corruption flaw was found in the Linux kernel's scheduler subsystem. This could allow a local user to crash the system or potentially escalate their privileges on the system.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Red Hat CVSS v3 Score Explanation

The AC is H because a rare race condition could trigger it, this would be difficult because it was found with static analysis and was not able to be triggered manually. Although pick_next_rt_entity() may return a type-confused entry, the BUG_ON will never trigger it since it assumes the error condition is NULL, while the buggy error condition would be a type-confused entry with the list head, which would then be used as a type-confused sched_rt_entity.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability,Integrity,Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

When a memory buffer is accessed using the wrong type, it could read or write memory out of the bounds of the buffer, if the allocated buffer is smaller than the type that the code is attempting to access, leading to a crash and possibly code execution.
