CVE-2022-42432

Description

A flaw was found in the nft_osf_eval function in the netfilter subsystem of the Linux kernel. This issue results from the lack of proper initialization of memory prior to accessing it, and could allow a local privileged user to leak stale kernel stack data to userspace.

Statement

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7 and 8 are not affected by this flaw as they did not include support for Netfilter OSF over nfnetlink (CONFIG_NETFILTER_NETLINK_OSF).

Initial variables usually contain junk, which can not be trusted for consistency. This can lead to denial of service conditions, or modify control flow in unexpected ways. In some cases, an attacker can "pre-initialize" the variable using previous actions, which might enable code execution. This can cause a race condition if a lock variable check passes when it should not.
