Description

A use-after-free flaw was found in the byacc package. When processing a specially crafted file, malloc incorrectly accesses the released memory.

byacc is not a network facing service, so a network attack vector does not make sense at all. If the argument is that it can be invoked by a network service then that's the responsibility of the service invoking byacc to sanitize inputs to it.

By being a standalone program, byacc is not designed to accept untrusted inputs over the network, much like cp, ls, etc. As a result, the only plausible security consequence byacc can cause is an escalation of privileges and these bugs don't do that; byacc is not a setuid program either.

The use of previously freed memory may corrupt valid data, if the memory area in question has been allocated and used properly elsewhere.

Read operations on freed memory can sometimes leak sensitive information instead of causing a crash

If malicious data is entered before chunk consolidation can take place, it may be possible to take advantage of a write-what-where primitive to execute arbitrary code. If the newly allocated data happens to hold a class, in C++ for example, various function pointers may be scattered within the heap data. If one of these function pointers is overwritten with an address to valid shellcode, execution of arbitrary code can be achieved.
