CVE-2026-98634

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's SCSI ZBC (Zoned Block Commands) driver. This vulnerability can lead to a denial of service (DoS) when the system attempts to scan a storage device that reports an excessively large number of zones. Due to integer truncation and overflow during zone calculations, the kernel allocates insufficient resources and fails to manage zone state properly. An attacker capable of connecting a specially crafted storage device could exploit this issue to trigger inconsistent internal bookkeeping and crash the system.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because exploitation requires physical access or administrative control to present a specially crafted zoned block device, restricting the failure condition to a local denial of service. Standard enterprise installations do not typically utilize Zoned Block Commands (ZBC) drives, and such media is rarely attached dynamically in production environments. In virtualized settings, an administrator or hypervisor would need to deliberately expose an untrusted zoned storage device to a guest kernel to provoke this issue.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
