CVE-2026-98499

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Wacom Human Interface Device (HID) driver. When processing a device report descriptor with mismatched usage and count configurations, the driver can calculate an invalid memory offset and perform an out-of-bounds read beyond the allocated report buffer. A local attacker could exploit this issue by connecting or emulating a specially crafted HID device, potentially allowing them to expose sensitive kernel memory to user space.

Statement

This flaw is evaluated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires either physical access to insert a malicious input device or local access with permissions to emulate HID hardware. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux enterprise environments, physical console access is restricted and virtual HID creation via /dev/uhid requires administrative privileges. Therefore, the threat of an out-of-bounds read causing a denial of service or leaking kernel memory to user space is largely limited to environments where untrusted users can supply arbitrary hardware.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
