CVE-2026-98032

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's tracing subsystem. A race condition occurs when concurrent subbuffer resizing takes place while raw trace data is being read. A local user could exploit this flaw to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) or disclose uninitialized kernel memory due to stale buffer size values.

Statement

A race between ring buffer subbuffer resizing and trace_pipe_raw reading can leave the reader using a page whose order and capacity no longer match the current subbuffer size. Stale size values can cause data to be copied or cleared using the wrong capacity, which may expose uninitialized kernel memory to userspace or access memory outside the destination page and crash the kernel. For the CVSS the PR:L value is used for the paranoid score because tracefs access can be delegated to a tracing group, container administrator, or restricted service account without granting complete host administration. The attack is local and requires a timing window between a privileged resize operation and a trace_pipe_raw read, so AC:H is appropriate. There is no direct network attack path. Impact includes kernel memory disclosure and denial of service, with possible integrity impact if the size mismatch results in an out of bounds write.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
