CVE-2026-97542

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's XFS file system. When performing online repair of an allocation group free list (AGFL), the kernel fails to check return values during bitmap processing, silently ignoring errors. A local user capable of triggering file system repair operations could cause the kernel to proceed with inconsistent in-memory metadata, potentially leading to file system corruption or a denial of service (DoS).

Statement

A low impact flaw was found in the Linux kernel's XFS file system in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. When the kernel performs online repair of an allocation group free list (AGFL), the return value of xagb_bitmap_walk() is not checked in xrep_agfl_fill(), so a failure of xagb_bitmap_set() is silently dropped and the repair continues with inconsistent in-core metadata. A local user able to trigger XFS online file system repair (scrub) operations on a mounted file system could cause the kernel to proceed with inconsistent in-memory metadata, potentially resulting in file system corruption or a denial of service; the flaw provides no memory corruption or privilege escalation primitive, and it only manifests when an internal error (such as a bitmap operation failure) occurs during repair. For these reasons Red Hat rates the impact of this flaw as low.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (from the 9.6 update stream onward), Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, OpenShift Container Platform 4.19 and later, and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS 2 are affected; the fix is currently deferred because this low-severity error-handling issue is best addressed in a future scheduled kernel update, and the residual risk is limited to metadata inconsistency, corruption, or denial of service on a file system whose online AGFL repair encounters an internal error. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, and 8, the earlier Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 and 9.4 update streams, and OpenShift Container Platform 4.18 and earlier are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in their kernels.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
