CVE-2026-93433
Description
A flaw was found in libstoragemgmt. An attacker with control over a local or virtual storage device could provide specially crafted SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) Vital Product Data (VPD) page 0x80 data. This malformed data, specifically an untrusted page length field, can lead to a stack buffer overflow in the _sg_parse_vpd_80() function during serial number parsing. Successful exploitation could result in a denial of service by crashing or destabilizing the process querying the serial number.
Statement
This Moderate flaw in libstoragemgmt allows a local attacker with control over a storage device or virtual storage backend to trigger a stack buffer overflow. By supplying malformed SCSI VPD page 0x80 data, the vulnerable process can be crashed, leading to a denial of service. Exploitation requires local access and manipulation of storage device data, limiting its broader impact.
Mitigation
Avoid querying local disk serial numbers from untrusted or attacker-controlled storage devices or virtual storage backends. Systems should be configured to reject or sanitize malformed SCSI VPD page 0x80 data before it is processed by libstoragemgmt to prevent stack buffer overflows.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
