CVE-2026-92960

Description

A flaw was found in vm2. In configurations allowing built-in modules, vm2 fails to restrict access to the host operating system and Domain Name System (DNS) modules. An attacker who can execute code inside the sandbox can exploit this flaw to hijack the host process DNS resolver, redirecting outbound network queries to an attacker-controlled server. Additionally, this flaw allows the attacker to obtain sensitive host system information, such as process credentials and network topology, or alter process execution priorities.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Important because untrusted scripts executed within a sandboxed context can alter host process networking configurations and expose system-level identity details. Successful exploitation allows an attacker executing sandboxed code to hijack global name resolution for the entire host process, potentially intercepting outbound network communication without requiring direct operating system command execution. In supported Red Hat offerings such as Red Hat Developer Hub and Ansible Automation Platform, impact is contingent upon services evaluating untrusted code in sandbox environments configured with wildcard built-in module resolution.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
