CVE-2026-92954
Description
A flaw was found in vm2. An attacker capable of running untrusted code within the sandbox can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by causing the host application process to terminate. This vulnerability exists because asynchronous operations (Promises) returned from the host environment are not properly marked as handled across the sandbox boundary. By invoking a host function that returns a rejected Promise and ignoring its return value, the unhandled rejection causes the underlying Node.js runtime to crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Important severity because an untrusted script running inside the sandbox can trigger process termination on the host, causing a complete denial of service. In Red Hat products embedding vm2 to evaluate dynamic user-provided code, such as developer portals and orchestration backends, an attacker can exploit the bridge boundary to crash the application runtime. Although the flaw does not facilitate sandbox escapes, privilege escalation, or unauthorized access to data, the crash disrupts service availability for all concurrent users sharing the host instance.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
