CVE-2026-92953

Description

A flaw was found in vm2. The sandbox fails to properly isolate host object structures from untrusted code running inside the virtual machine. An attacker can exploit this issue by manipulating object prototype chains to modify shared host prototypes, resulting in prototype pollution (the unauthorized alteration of base object properties). This flaw allows an attacker to compromise the integrity of host-created objects after execution completes, potentially leading to unauthorized data alteration or a denial of service (DoS).

Statement

Red Hat Product Security rates this vulnerability as an Important severity issue because untrusted JavaScript code executed within the sandbox can escape isolation boundaries and tamper with the host runtime environment. Exploitation allows code running in the sandboxed context to modify shared object prototypes, undermining the integrity and availability of the surrounding Node.js application. While exploitation requires the ability to supply code for evaluation, the resulting blast radius allows complete compromise of the host process without requiring elevated system privileges.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
