CVE-2026-92951
Description
A flaw was found in vm2. The external package allowlist improperly validates package names using substring matching rather than exact name boundaries. An attacker capable of running code within the sandbox can exploit this issue by requesting a package name containing an allowlisted substring, allowing them to load unauthorized host packages and execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having an Important impact for Red Hat products because an attacker capable of supplying untrusted code to the sandbox can break out of isolation and achieve code execution on the underlying host system. Applications such as Red Hat Developer Hub and Ansible Automation Platform that bundle the vm2 library to isolate script evaluation are susceptible if custom module allowlists are configured. Successful exploitation allows unauthorized access to host-level Node.js modules and services, bypassing intended sandbox boundaries without requiring elevated privileges.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
