CVE-2026-92092

Description

A flaw was found in openshift-ansible. The installer container's run script downloads and executes remote inventory and dynamic scripts without integrity verification. A remote attacker, by performing a Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack or compromising the HTTP server providing these scripts, could substitute an arbitrary executable. This malicious executable would then run with the installer's user ID (UID) and full cluster-provisioning privileges, leading to arbitrary code execution.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Important severity because successful exploitation allows arbitrary script execution with cluster installer privileges, though an attacker requires a privileged network position (such as a Man-in-the-Middle) or a compromised remote script server to intercept the transfer. The risk is limited to installations that actively configure remote inventory sources via environment variables. Standard environments utilizing locally supplied inventory definitions or operating in isolated networks do not trigger the dynamic remote retrieval mechanism.

Mitigation

To mitigate this issue, ensure that the environment where the openshift-ansible installer container is executed is secured against network Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks. When using the `INVENTORY_URL` or `DYNAMIC_SCRIPT_URL` environment variables, always provide URLs that use HTTPS to a trusted server and verify the server's certificate. If possible, avoid using remote inventory scripts and instead provide local inventory files to the installer.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
