CVE-2026-90829
Description
A flaw was found in GNU Binutils. A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability by manipulating the SHT_GROUP Section. This manipulation can lead to a null pointer dereference within the bfd_elf_set_group_contents function. The primary consequence of this flaw is a denial of service.
Statement
Red Hat Product Security rates the impact of this vulnerability as Moderate because it requires processing a specially crafted ELF binary to trigger an application crash, restricting the blast radius to the local development or build process. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, binutils utilities are short-lived command-line tools that run only when invoked by users or automated compilation pipelines. Because the defect causes an unhandled null pointer exception without enabling remote exploitation or privilege escalation, the primary risk is limited to a localized denial of service during binary processing.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
