CVE-2026-90816

Description

A flaw was found in FFmpeg. A CPU exhaustion issue can occur in the HLS protocol module when handling a specially crafted HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) playlist due to insufficient validation of duration or target_duration parameters. This vulnerability can lead to an excessive consumption of CPU resources, eventually resulting in a denial of service.

Statement

To exploit this issue, an attacker needs to convince a user to process a specially crafted HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) playlist, limiting its exposure. Furthermore, this vulnerability can cause an excessive consumption of CPU resources, eventually resulting in a denial of service, with no other security impact. For these reasons, this flaw has been rated with a moderate severity.

Mitigation

Do not process untrusted HLS playlists using FFmpeg.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
