CVE-2026-89523

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's MediaTek mt7925 Wi-Fi driver. When the device is reset, suspended, or unregistered, a pending work item (mlo_pm_work) can continue to execute. This can lead to the work item accessing memory that has already been freed (a use-after-free vulnerability) or sending commands to unavailable firmware. The most significant consequence is a denial of service, which can cause system instability or crashes.

Statement

A race in the mt7925 WiFi driver can leave mlo_pm_work pending while the device is reset, suspended, or unregistered. If the delayed work runs after the device state becomes invalid, it may access vif or bss data that was already freed or try to send MCU commands while firmware is unavailable. For the CVSS the PR:L value is used because reliable triggering typically requires a local user or local service able to initiate WiFi power management, suspend, reset, or device lifecycle transitions, but not necessarily full root privileges in common desktop deployments. The issue is not directly network reachable based on the patch alone. Impact is at least local denial of service via kernel crash. In the paranoid case it may allow confidentiality or integrity impact because the bug class is a race with a possible use-after-free on driver and wireless interface state.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
