CVE-2026-86463

Description

A flaw was found in the Apache CXF Feed Item Query Language (FIQL) query parser, which can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS). When evaluating query expressions, the parser attempts excessive combinations upon encountering long input strings lacking operators. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by submitting a crafted search query to consume server CPU resources, slowing down or halting service for legitimate users.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat products because an unauthenticated remote attacker can cause CPU exhaustion leading to denial of service, but cannot compromise confidentiality, modify system state, or achieve arbitrary code execution. The affected Feed Item Query Language module is an optional search extension in Apache CXF, requiring services to explicitly expose endpoints configured with FIQL query capabilities. In typical deployments across Red Hat JBoss Web Server, Apache Camel, and Fuse, search extensions are not enabled globally by default, limiting the blast radius solely to endpoints specifically designed to parse dynamic search criteria.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Attackers can create crafted inputs that intentionally cause the regular expression to use excessive backtracking in a way that causes the CPU consumption to spike.
