CVE-2026-85781

Description

A flaw was found in the Amazon EFS Container Storage Interface (CSI) Driver. When the controller is configured with the non-default --delete-access-point-root-dir=true option, it does not verify that the EFS access point referenced by a PersistentVolume's volumeHandle belongs to the file system referenced by that same volumeHandle. An authenticated Kubernetes user with PersistentVolume creation privileges could exploit this vulnerability. By crafting a PersistentVolume volumeHandle that pairs an access point from one filesystem with a different target filesystem, an attacker could cause recursive deletion of directories on an Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) filesystem they are not authorized to access. This could lead to a denial of service or data loss.

Statement

This flaw allows an authenticated Kubernetes user with PersistentVolume creation privileges within OpenShift Container Platform to trigger unauthorized recursive directory deletion on Amazon EFS filesystems. By exploiting unverified access point ownership in the EFS CSI Driver, a malicious user could craft a volumeHandle to target and delete directories beyond their authorized scope, leading to significant data integrity and availability concerns.

Mitigation

Ensure the EFS CSI Driver controller is configured with --delete-access-point-root-dir=false
(the default setting). Deployments that have not explicitly enabled this flag are not affected
by this vulnerability. If the flag is enabled and required for your workflow, restrict
PersistentVolume creation privileges to trusted administrators using Kubernetes RBAC.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
