CVE-2026-85473

Description

A flaw was found in auth0/java-jwt. An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending a JSON Web Token (JWT) containing an out-of-range timestamp claim. Because the issue occurs during token parsing before cryptographic signature verification, processing these malformed tokens can terminate execution threads and degrade service availability.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because, while it can be triggered remotely without authentication, the failure only terminates individual worker threads rather than causing a complete process crash or persistent system compromise. In Red Hat integration runtimes where java-jwt parses incoming tokens, an attacker would need to issue sustained or repeated malformed requests to deplete the thread pool and degrade service availability. Furthermore, the issue does not permit unauthorized data access or modification, limiting the scope strictly to partial denial of service.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
