CVE-2026-82660

Description

A flaw was found in Nodemailer, a module for sending emails. The jsonTransport component, responsible for handling message data, does not correctly enforce security options designed to prevent unauthorized file and URL access. A remote attacker could exploit this by sending specially crafted messages containing malicious file paths or URLs. This bypasses the intended security controls, potentially allowing the attacker to read sensitive local files or access external web resources, leading to unauthorized information disclosure.

Statement

This Moderate impact flaw in Nodemailer's jsonTransport allows an attacker to bypass intended access controls. By injecting crafted path or href values into message content, an attacker can read local files or fetch external URLs, leading to information disclosure. This affects Red Hat products that integrate vulnerable versions of Nodemailer.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Application Data

Without appropriate protection mechanisms, the client can easily tamper with cookies and similar web data. Reliance on the cookies without detailed validation can lead to problems such as SQL injection. If you use cookie values for security related decisions on the server side, manipulating the cookies might lead to violations of security policies such as authentication bypassing, user impersonation and privilege escalation. In addition, storing sensitive data in the cookie without appropriate protection can also lead to disclosure of sensitive user data, especially data stored in persistent cookies.
