CVE-2026-82035

Description

A flaw was found in PyMuPDF. This path traversal vulnerability exists in the extract_objects() function, specifically within the font branch. A remote attacker can exploit this by providing a specially crafted PDF, EPUB, XPS, or FB2 file. The vulnerability allows the attacker to use encoded path separators in the BaseFont name, leading to arbitrary file writes outside the intended output directory without requiring authentication or elevated privileges.

Statement

A path traversal flaw rated IMPORTANT by Red Hat Product Security affects the PyMuPDF library as bundled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI (rhel-ai-3) container images. The vulnerability exists in the font branch of PyMuPDF's extract_objects() function, where the output filename is constructed by joining a document-controlled BaseFont name directly onto the user-supplied output directory without stripping path separators or dot-dot sequences. A remote attacker can supply a specially crafted PDF, EPUB, XPS, or FB2 file whose BaseFont name contains encoded path separators that decode to ../ sequences or absolute paths; when a user processes such a file with PyMuPDF's object extraction, arbitrary files can be written outside the intended output directory without requiring authentication or elevated privileges, resulting in a high impact to integrity and a low impact to availability. Red Hat rated this flaw CVSS 7.1 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L), which is consistent with the upstream CVSS rating of 7.1; exploitation requires user interaction to process the malicious document. All affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI container images ship vulnerable PyMuPDF versions, and remediation is being pursued for the affected streams by the delegated Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI product team.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
