CVE-2026-80705
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's drm/amd/display component. This vulnerability arises from an insufficient check during the allocation of a 'phantom plane' within the display driver. If the allocation fails and this failure is not properly handled, it can lead to a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
A low impact denial-of-service flaw was found in the Linux kernel's drm/amd/display driver. The return value of dml21_add_phantom_plane() was not checked; when the phantom plane allocation fails, the driver later dereferences the missing plane, causing a kernel segfault that crashes the system. A local low-privileged user able to trigger the failed allocation can therefore cause a denial of service, with no impact on confidentiality or integrity (CVSS:3.1 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H; the Low impact rating reflects that only availability of the local system is affected). The kernel and kernel-rt packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (minor updates 9.6 and later) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, and the RHIVOS (Red Hat In-Vehicle OS) streams, are affected. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and 8 and the earlier RHEL 9 minor updates (9.2, 9.4) are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in those kernels. For the affected streams the fix is deferred to a future update because exploitation requires local access and can only crash the system; the residual risk of deferral is limited to a local denial of service with no privilege escalation, information disclosure, or data tampering.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
