CVE-2026-80583

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel, specifically within the lpass-tx-macro audio codec driver. This vulnerability arises from the driver's incorrect handling of certain control values, where it uses an improper data type for accessing enumerated kernel controls. This error can lead to a system instability on 64-bit kernels configured for debugging, causing attempts to read these controls to fail. The primary consequence is a denial of service, preventing legitimate operations related to the audio codec.

Statement

A moderate-impact flaw was found in the Linux kernel ASoC lpass-tx-macro audio codec driver. The tx_macro_dec_mode_get() and tx_macro_dec_mode_put() handlers for the enumerated "DEC0 MODE" through "DEC7 MODE" controls access the control value through ucontrol->value.integer.value[0] (a long) instead of ucontrol->value.enumerated.item[0] (an unsigned int). On 64-bit kernels this type confusion results in a 4-byte out-of-bounds write past the enumerated item, and on kernels built with CONFIG_SND_CTL_DEBUG every read of these controls fails with -EINVAL. A local user with low privileges could trigger this through the sound controls, causing a denial of service of the audio codec operations and potentially a kernel panic. Red Hat rates this flaw as Moderate (CVSS 3.1 score 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) because only availability is impacted; this is lower than the upstream CVE record's score of 7.8, which additionally claims high confidentiality and integrity impact that the technical evidence does not support. All Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS kernel streams are marked not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in Red Hat's shipped kernels.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
