CVE-2026-79781
Description
A flaw was found in rclone. This path traversal vulnerability allows a remote attacker to read and overwrite sensitive files outside of their intended directory by manipulating S3 object keys with 'dot-dot' segments (e.g., ../). This could lead to unauthorized access and modification of critical system files.
Statement
Moderate: This path traversal flaw in rclone allows remote attackers to read and overwrite arbitrary files outside the intended S3 bucket when the rclone serve s3 command is actively exposed. This could lead to unauthorized data access and modification on systems where rclone is configured to serve S3 content.
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, do not run rclone serve s3 with anonymous access. Configure S3 serve authentication using --auth-key, do not place sensitive files at the serve root outside intended bucket directories, and avoid exposing rclone serve s3 to untrusted networks.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
