CVE-2026-79056
Description
A flaw was found in chromium-browser. A use-after-free vulnerability in the ServiceWorker component allows a remote attacker to potentially execute arbitrary code outside of the sandbox. This can be achieved by enticing a user to visit a specially crafted HTML page.
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated as having an Important severity impact rather than Moderate or Low because it enables remote code execution breaking out of sandbox restrictions, despite requiring user interaction. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the chromium package is not included in core operating system repositories and is distributed only via community channels such as EPEL. Exploitation demands that an end user navigate to a malicious web page, meaning automated server environments and headless installations do not face exposure.
Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Read Memory
If the expired pointer is used in a read operation, an attacker might be able to control data read in by the application.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
If the expired pointer references a memory location that is not accessible to the product, or points to a location that is "malformed" (such as NULL) or larger than expected by a read or write operation, then a crash may occur.
Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability
Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
If the expired pointer is used in a function call, or points to unexpected data in a write operation, then code execution may be possible.
