CVE-2026-77621
Description
A flaw was found in Vector. A path traversal vulnerability in the file sink may allow a remote attacker who controls event fields referenced in the output path template to create or overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the Vector process. Depending on the files affected, this may result in arbitrary code execution.
Statement
Red Hat OpenShift Logging is not affected by this vulnerability when deployed in a supported configuration.
In Red Hat OpenShift Logging 6.0, 6.2, 6.4, 6.5, and 6.6, the file sink component is included in the Vector build but is not reachable. The Vector configuration is generated by the Red Hat OpenShift Logging Operator from the ClusterLogForwarder resource, and the ClusterLogForwarder API does not provide a file output type. Use of the file sink would require placing the ClusterLogForwarder in the Unmanaged state and modifying the collector configuration manually. Operating the ClusterLogForwarder in the Unmanaged state is not supported by Red Hat.
Mitigation
Ensure that the ClusterLogForwarder resource remains in the Managed state. Where the collector configuration has been modified manually while in the Unmanaged state, verify that the file sink is not configured with an output path template derived from event fields.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity,Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories
The application can operate on unexpected files, such as system files or configuration files. Confidentiality is violated when the targeted filename is not directly readable by the attacker.
Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability
Technical Impact: Modify Files or Directories; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
The application can operate on unexpected files. This may violate integrity if the filename is written to, or if the filename is for a program or other form of executable code.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)
The application can operate on unexpected files. Availability can be violated if the attacker specifies an unexpected file that the application modifies. Availability can also be affected if the attacker specifies a filename for a large file, or points to a special device or a file that does not have the format that the application expects.
