CVE-2026-77372

Description

A flaw was found in VeraCrypt. The deserialization routines responsible for processing messages sent from unprivileged user interfaces to the elevated root service fail to properly validate data lengths and element counts. A local attacker can exploit this flaw by sending specially crafted serialization payloads to the privileged service, triggering a heap-based buffer overflow or an out-of-bounds memory read. This issue may allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges, disclose sensitive memory, or cause a denial of service (DoS).

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Important because an unprivileged local attacker can exploit the inter-process communication boundary to gain root privileges. Although exploitation requires local authentication rather than remote access, the ability to fully compromise the host by targeting the elevated background daemon elevates the severity above Moderate. Red Hat Enterprise Linux relies on LUKS and cryptsetup for storage encryption and does not include VeraCrypt, meaning default installations are unaffected.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.

Other

Technical Impact: Unexpected State

Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
