CVE-2026-74693

Description

A flaw was found in the prestera network driver in the Linux kernel. The prestera_fw_hdr_parse() function reads the firmware header before checking that the firmware image contains the entire header. This oversight could allow a local attacker to provide a specially crafted, malformed firmware image, potentially leading to a denial of service (DoS) by causing the system to crash or become unstable.

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact for Red Hat environments because exploiting it requires local privileges alongside physical Marvell Prestera switch hardware, restricting the blast radius strictly to a system crash. Confidentiality and system integrity are not compromised since arbitrary code execution cannot be achieved through this out-of-bounds read. Furthermore, default Red Hat Enterprise Linux installations are not affected as the driver is not enabled in supported distribution kernels.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
