CVE-2026-73253
Description
A flaw was found in Mongoose. Wildcard certificate matching in its built-in Transport Layer Security (TLS) stack does not properly restrict matches to a single domain level. An on-path network attacker with a valid wildcard certificate for a parent domain could exploit this flaw to bypass hostname verification and impersonate subdomains. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to intercept and modify sensitive encrypted network traffic.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity,Authentication
Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism; Gain Privileges or Assume Identity
When a certificate is invalid or malicious, it might allow an attacker to spoof a trusted entity by interfering in the communication path between the host and client. The product might connect to a malicious host while believing it is a trusted host, or the product might be deceived into accepting spoofed data that appears to originate from a trusted host.
